Cognitair 2022 – An Intercollegiate Quiz competition

The 2019 Batch Medical students of BGS GIMS, Bangalore organized Cognitair 2022 – an intercollegiate quiz for UG Medical Students of Phase II, III- Part 1 and Phase III- Part 2 on the 31st of May 2022, Tuesday from 8:45 AM to 4PM.

The event was based on Phase I and Phase II MBBS subjects (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology) along with Public Health and AETCOM to ensure a well-rounded approach, aimed to be on par with the PG entrance examinations like NEXT, USMLE, etc.

There were a total of 38 teams that registered from 13 different medical colleges. 29 teams from 11 medical colleges participated in the event.

This event presented amazing opportunities and benefits

  • Opportunity for students to explore their skills outside of classroom like leadership, decision making, organization and curation of events
  • opportunity for students to add extracurricular activities to their CV that most of the PG colleges require

The event was the brainchild of two students (Miss Deekshaa Vinay and Mr. Vishal Venugopal) from the batch of 2019. They proposed the idea to the Dean cum Principal of BGS GIMS, DR. M E Mohan, for hosting an intercollegiate UG medical quiz on 15th April 2022, which received the approval immediately. The budget and the event was then brought forth to Reverend Sri Sri Dr. Prakashnath Swamiji, who then gave it his blessings

The core team which consisted of 6 students (Miss Deekshaa Vinay, Mr. Vishal Venugopal, Miss Aisiri Deepak, Mr. Nikhil Vallamkondu, Mr. Anup Sarang and Mr. Preetham Reddy) and  faculty advisors (Dr Naveen, Dr Thej, Dr. Rohini and Dr Roopashree)

 The core team was instrumental in devising and conceptualizing the various rounds. Most of the questions and concepts were provided by the faculty members of the departments concerned.

The outline for the day of the event was:

  • Prelims- 8:45 AM
  • Inauguration- 10:30 AM
  • Semi Finals (Conundrum)- 11 AM
  • Lunch- 1 PM
  • Finals (Enigma)- 2 PM
  • Valedictory Program- 3:30 PM

The preliminary round comprised 45 MCQs that were clinically based. 8 teams were selected to move to the Semi Final

The Inauguration program was composed by our students Miss Aisiri Deepak and Mr. Preetham Reddy, began with invoking blessings from lord almighty and with humble pranams to our Swamijis. The Dean cum Principal Dr M E Mohan addressed the gathering highlighting the importance of the present curriculum and quiz being an academic program, the relevance of the quiz to a medical undergraduate. Following a brief introduction about the event by Miss Deeksha Vinay. Dean cum Principal Dr M E Mohan announced the 8 semifinalists. The semifinal round “Conundrum” was conducted by the quiz masters Mr. Anup Sarang and Mr. Vishal Venugopal. The rounds were innovative and thought provoking. At the end of a gripping and captivating semifinals, four top teams of the eight teams were shortlisted for the grand finale “ENIGMA”.

The ENIGMA round, a case-based round, was planned meticulously to unlock the “clinician” in each one of the participants. The round lasted for about 40 minutes at the end of which the teams had to arrive at the diagnoses racing against time. The quiz concluded with the last of the teams solving the case. The Results of Enigma and the scores of semifinals were considered for results

The valedictory program commenced with Miss Pranjali inviting the Dignitaries Dr M. E Mohan, Dean cum Principal, Dr Srikanth Kulkarni, Medical Superintendent, Dr Krishnamurthy N, HOD Biochemistry and Head of medical education unit, Dr Naveen, Professor of Medicine.

Finally, the winners were announced during the Valedictory Program

First Prize winners- Arun Ram Ramakrishnan & Vignesh Prakash from M S Ramaiah Medical College,Bangalore

Awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 10000, BasidiaMed subscription of 12 months and books from Jaypee and Wolters Kluwer.

Second Prize- Sahishnu Shastry and Veena S from The Oxford Medical College Hospital, Bangalore

Awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 7000, BasidiaMed subscription of 6 months and books from Jaypee and Wolters Kluwer.

Third Prize winners- Ella Vignesh B Rao and Nagendra S from BGS Global Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore

Awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 5000, BasidiaMed subscription of 3 months and books from Jaypee and Wolters Kluwer.

 The day concluded with the vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. Nikhil Vallamkondu. At the end of the day, the event was a huge success and received overwhelming feedback from the participants and spectators and will be continued as praxis by the subsequent batches.

The Batch of 2019 made a mark in the history of BGS GIMS as the first batch to host an intercollegiate quiz.
